Zelpha Faughender, age 99 years, 10 months, 16 days, of 1345 Michigan Ave. SW, Huron, died Saturday, December 1, 2007, at the Huron Nursing Home. Her graveside ceremony will be at 1:00 PM Wednesday, December 5, at the Welter Funeral Home with Rev. Steven Brandsrud officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery. Closed casket visitation will be from 1:00 to 8:00 pm this Tuesday at the Welter Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to American Lutheran Church. Zelpha Faughender was born Zelpha Mae Lowery on January 15, 1908, to Peter and Hila (McAtee) Lowery at Burlington, Missouri. As a small child she moved with her family to rural Huron where she attended country school, then attended and graduated from Huron High School in 1926. On May 16, 1931, Zelpha married Merlin Faughender at Huron. The couple lived in Huron where Zelpha worked as a dental assistant for Dr. J. Spink. In 1935 they moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, and in 1940 to Memphis, Tennessee. In 1943 Zelpha attended dental college at the University of Memphis graduating in 1945. She then worked as a dental hygienist at the VA Hospital in Memphis. In 1950 the couple moved to Booneville, Mississippi. Her husband, Merlin, died on September 16, 1970, and Zelpha moved back to Huron in 1971. She was a member of American Lutheran Church, and a past member of the Rebekah Lodge. She is survived by nieces and nephews, including Hazel Jones of Huron, LaVonne (Arland) Walters of Cavour, and Karen (Reinhold) Fuerst of Lake Byron, SD. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Merlin; and 8 brothers and sisters.
