Obituary

William P. Bill Verschoor, age 87, of 1671 Kansas Ave. SE, Huron, died Sunday, November 26, 2006 at the Huron Regional Medical Center. His funeral Mass will be at 11:00 AM Monday, December 4th at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish with Father Joe Holzhauser officiating. Burial will be at St. Martin Cemetery with Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council. Friends may call Sunday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the Mass Monday morning. There will be a Scripture Service at 7:30 PM Sunday evening with the family present from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the funeral home. William Patrick Verschoor was born on January 30, 1919, to John and Ethel (Ryan) Verschoor at Kimball, SD. He attended and graduated from Notre Dame Academy in Mitchell and attended Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell and graduated from Creighton University in Omaha, NE. He went on to attend graduate school at Harvard University in Boston, MA. He enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II and served in the Pacific Theater reaching the rank of Lieutenant. After his honorable discharge in 1945 he worked at Western Chevrolet Company in Mitchell. On July 12, 1949, Bill married Dolores Dee Langenfeld at Watertown. They lived in Mitchell until 1951, then moved to Huron where they have lived since that time. Bill owned and operated Verschoor Chevrolet until his retirement in 1970. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, was active in the Sertoma Club, Toastmasters, Knights of Columbus, Elks Lodge #444, Huron Chamber of Commerce, a board member of Northwest Bank and was a lifelong member of the Huron Country Club where at age 80 shot a hole in one. He enjoyed many activities including reading, gardening, playing cards, traveling, sports and especially watching Notre Dame football, the stock market, and numerous other business endeavors. He is survived by 5 sons and 2 daughters, William Skip Verschoor of Sioux Falls, Philip (Linda) Verschoor of Sioux Falls, Jim (Jan) Verschoor of Rapid City, Susan Jordahl of Palm Springs, CA, Margie (Jim) Aldren of Rapid City, Bob (Steph) Verschoor of Pueblo West, CO and Richard Verschoor of Sturgis; 5 grandchildren, Joe and Matt Jordahl, Todd and Tyler Aldren and Allison Verschoor; 3 brothers, John (Pauline) Verschoor of Chamberlain, Paul Verschoor of Phoenix, AZ and Pat Verschoor of Rapid City; 2 sisters, Vernile Carney of Sacramento, CA and Virginia Dummer of Monroe, LA; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Dolores on September 13, 2004, his parents, and a brother Robert. Casket bearers will be Jerry DesLauriers, Robert Taylor, George Manolis, Clair Bonebright, Pete Dormady and Pete Mies.
