Obituary

William "Billy" Sumption, age 65, of Huron, died on Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at Huron Regional Medical Center in Huron. His memorial service will be 2:30 pm Saturday, March 30, 2013, at Welter Funeral Home in Huron with burial of his cremated remains at a later date in the Frederick Cemetery, Frederick, SD. Memorial visitation with family present will be Saturday afternoon one hour prior to the service. William Walden Sumption was born January 14, 1948, in Frederick, SD, to Guy and Lois (Gabel) Sumption. He grew up on the family farm near Frederick that raised prized Club calves. Billy graduated from Barnard High School in 1966. In High School, Billy excelled at most sports, especially football, and was in All-State Orchestra and Chorus. In 1972, he graduated from Northern State College in Aberdeen with degrees in Accounting, Business Management, Economics, and Marketing. While in college, Billy was President of Pi Beta Lamda. Billy was a bank auditor in Minneapolis before he became part owner in Hanson Distributing in Bloomington, MN, a distributor of Foosball tables. Billy was a South Dakota foosball legend who first played foosball in 1961. He was one of the game's earliest stars, teaming with partner Tom Hansen to dominate competition in the early 1970's. Billy loved to teach the game and was the mentor to such upper Midwest greats as Jim Wiswell, Mike Belz, and Brent Bednar. Billy's list of playing achievements includes a 1975 world mixed doubles title with Hall of Famer, Karen Gilliland. Billy was the first person inducted into the Foosball Hall of Fame when he was inducted in 1986. He was the also featured in an article in Sports Illustrated and on ESPN. The sports network was doing stories on Billy, chronicling how he dominated the sport in the 70's and 80's. Before his retirement in 1976, Billy won many tournaments receiving top prizes including Porsches and very large cash prizes. Foosball was Billy's life. He had just returned from the $50,000 Hall of Fame Classic in Las Vegas prior to his death. Billy is survived by his 2 children, Eric (Leyla) Sumption of Monroe, WA, and Jennifer (Chris) Leonard of Bothell, WA; 3 grandchildren, Leylanie Ortiz Sumption, Alyssa Kachmar, and Ayden Sumption; 2 brothers, Robert Sumption of Aberdeen, and Les Sumption of Bath, SD; 3 sisters, Darlys Miller of Iowa, Delores Kramer of Worthington, MN, and Janet Pence of Aberdeen; many nieces and nephews. Billy was preceded in death by his parents.
