Obituary

William Bill Meyer, age 81, of 244 Wyoming Ave. SW, Huron, died Monday, August 1, 2005, at the Royal C. Johnson Veterans Administration Hospital at Sioux Falls. His funeral service will be 10:00 AM Saturday, August 6, at the American Lutheran Church with Rev. Steven Brandsrud officiating. Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery with Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council. Friends may call Friday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Saturday morning. The family will be present from 7:00 to 8:30 PM Friday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the American Lutheran Church. William Meyer was born on July 27, 1924, to Arden and Gertrude (Kurth) Meyer at Winona, MN. He attended schools at Winona, and prior to his graduation from high school, he was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II. While in the service he was commissioned to work for the railroad. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Winona. Bill worked as a machinist for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad during his career, except for 1955, when Bill worked as a tool-&-die maker for General Motors, commuting from Winona to Chicago. On September 28, 1945, Fern married William Bill Meyer at Winona, where the couple made their home. In 1949 they moved to Huron; returned to Winona in 1950; and to Huron again in 1956. Bill retired, after many years, from the railroad. He was a member of the American Lutheran Church, William Reaves American Legion Post #7 of Huron, and the Machinists Local Union of Huron. His interests included hunting, fishing, and traveling with Fern, especially on their motorcycle. He is survived by 4 daughters, Terry (Deone) Norris of Huron, Kathy (Rodney) Norfleet of Grand Bay, AL, Carol Meyer of Littleton, CO, and Nancy (Arlen) Hagen of Gillette, WY; 9 grandchildren, Leslie (Clyde) Shuemake, Laurie (Mike) Johnson, Lynn (Eric) Peterson, Eric (Jessie) Norfleet, Maximo Norfleet, Daniel Norfleet, Joshua Focht, Trista Hagen, and Brittany Hagen; 1 great grandson, Ethan Johnson; 1 sister-in-law, June Sporleder of Bancroft, NE; 1 niece, Joyce (Mark) Lase of Bancroft, NE; and 1 nephew, Mark Sporleder of Woodbridge, VA. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Fern on August 31, 2003.
