William “Bill” Long, age 60, of Alpena, SD, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 6, 2026 in Mitchell, SD. Visitation, with his family present, will be from 2-3 p.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2026 at Welter Funeral Home in Huron, SD.

Bill was born on October 7, 1965 in Huron to parents Raymond and Rosetta (Gange) Long. He attended Huron and Alpena schools, graduating from Alpena High School in 1984. He attended Mitchell Technical School in 1985.

Bill married Ellen LaBar in Pennsylvania on July 3, 2004. He moved back to Alpena in 2023 due to health issues and lived with his mother until his passing.

Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing and being with family. He is survived by his mother, Rosette Long of Alpena; two brothers, Dennis Long of Summit, SD and Alfred (Pauline) Long of Huron; two sisters, Cindy (Rick) Larson of Huron and Sharon (Sheri) Barth of Pierre; his wife Ellen Long; stepdaughter Ada LaBar and step granddaughter Sylvia; his Goddaughter Serena and Godsons Randy and Thomas, all of Pennsylvania; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Long; his nephew Cory Larson; his grandparents Ray (Lola) Long, Alfred (Pearl) Gange, parents-in-law Bruce and Joan LaBar; and numerous aunts and uncles.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be sent to Rosette Long at 608 3rd St. N, Alpena, SD 57312 to help cover costs for William’s funeral.
