William Duane "Bill" Aldrich, age 81 of Huron, SD, passed away on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at the Sanford (USD) Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD. His Celebration of Life service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 23, 2014 at the Welter Funeral Home, with burial at the Virgil Cemetery and military honors by the American Legion Owens-Kunze Post #116 of Alpena and the American Legion Hershman-Gordon Post # 59 of Wolsey. Memorial visitation with the family present will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday, August 22, at the Welter Funeral Home; or one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. William Duane Aldrich was born on July 18, 1933, to William D. and Irene (Hale) Aldrich at Virgil, S.D. He joined the Army January 24, 1952. He married Barbara Barstead December 26, 1956 in Woonsocket, S.D. Bill & Barb ran a dairy and general farming operation south of Alpena until 1976, where he was the Work & Win's 4-H Club leader and softball coach for many years. After farming he became a truck driver for Ralph Weelburg Construction Company and King Seed Company. Later Bill went on a combine crew for a dear friend, Phillip Edwards. His hobbies were woodworking, gardening, hunting and fishing. Bill had a passion for horses and when he was no longer able to ride, his interest spiraled toward rodeo. He spent many hours watching it in person and on T.V. Bill especially enjoyed watching the PBR with his Arizona friends. Another highlight of Bill's life was spending time with his family and friends. Bill was very active in the Virgil Legion Post. He was past Commander, Chaplain and Vice Commander. Bill, along with his wife, Barb, prepared and served lunch at numerous auctions for the Virgil Legion. He helped maintain the Virgil Cemetery, the pump house, the Legion Park and post home. Bill is survived by his wife, Barb and children. Doris: Jesse (Sarah), Jenilee (Kory). Trudy: Bryan (Nichole), Lisa, Scott (Shannon), and Andy (Rachel). Great grandchildren; Josie, William, Trey, Trinity, Tristin, Trina, Ryan, Garret, Kaitlin, Alan, Gracee, Olivia, Lane, Tyler, Diego, Ali, Kate, Audrey, Carson, Jayde, Tyler, Marcus, Harley, Teagan, Everett, Laney, AJ, and Lincoln. Sisters: Dorothy (John) Clouser, Huron; and Betty (Elmer) Presuhn, Virgil. Bill is preceded in death by his parents; Uncle Charlie; and sisters Isabell Goodall, Hazel Curtis, Catherine Fastnacht, and Doris Schiltz; grandchildren Brittney Chua and Bo Mutchelknaus; and great grandchild Hannah Chua.
