Wilbur Maas, age 86, of De Smet, formerly of Huron, died Thursday, October 27, 2011 at the De Smet Good Samaritan Center. His funeral will be 1:00 pm Saturday, October 29, 2011 at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Huron with burial at Restlawn Memory Garden Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be 6-8 pm Friday, October 28, 2011 at Welter Funeral Home; or one hour prior to the service at the church. Wilbur A. Maas was born January 31, 1925 in Yale, SD to Fred and Clara (Musolf) Maas. He attended Yale area schools. Once out of school, Wilbur stayed home to work on the family farm, eventually also working on his future in-laws farm as a hired hand. Wilbur joined the Army on May 4, 1945, serving at Ft. Lewis, WA before being Honorably Discharged on February 23, 1946. After returning to the Huron Area, he started farming and worked at Armour's and Co. part-time. Wilbur married Mary Jean Walz in 1954. Eventually he went full-time at Armour's and Co. and worked there for 30 years. After retiring, Wilbur kept busy doing yard work for several friends around town. Wilbur was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church. He enjoyed watching any ballgame on TV, playing cards with his family, and spending time with his grandchildren. Grateful for having shared in his life are his five children; Darwin (Michelle) Maas of Huron, Steve Maas of Sioux Falls, Monica (Ron) Blachford of De Smet, Randy (Janice) Maas of Sioux Falls, Brian (Carla) of Omaha; son-in-law, Chuck Gascoigne of Huron; 13 grandchildren, Angela Theustad, Heidi Gascoigne, Hilary Robey, Erik (Angela) Gascoigne, Shane Gascoigne, Ehren Maas, Amy (Martin) Lien, Megan Maas, Michael Maas, Peter Maas, Laura Maas, Alec Maas, Matthew Maas; seven great grandchildren; brother, Ray Maas of Yale; sisters, Lenora (Earl) Scott of New Underwood, Ethel Moeller of Sundance, WY; sister-in-law, Neva Maas of Yale; many nieces and nephews. Wilbur was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Jean in 2007; daughter, Myra Gascoigne; brothers, Elroy and Ralph; and sister, Viola.
