Obituary

Wesley H. Brist, age 62, of Huron, passed away, Friday, May 25, 2018 at Huron Regional Medical Center. His memorial service will be at 1pm on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at the Welter Funeral Home in Huron. Memorial visitation will be one hour prior to the memorial service.

Wesley Harrison Brist was born to Bennie Harrison Brist and Gladys (Moilan) Brist in Deadwood, SD. Wes was raised in the heart of the Black Hills his whole life. He married Mary Ann Miedema on September 29, 1977 and to this union, he gained a daughter and had a son. Wes took pride in his children and enjoyed many adventures with them, such as always cutting his families own Christmas trees and firewood, camping and hiking trips, raising chickens, and teaching them the meaning of work.

In the summer of 1993, Wes moved his family to Broadland, SD where Mary and he took over Mary's family home. Wes and Mary would always have a big garden and a dog or cat in tow. Wes spent hours in his garage where he shared an open door to all of his friends and grandkids. His grandkids were his pride and joy. Sharing his infinite "wisdom", taking Ethan fishing, or sharing a cup of coffee with his "Gator", Wes gave nicknames to all of his grandkids, "Jordo", "Apple Dumpling", "Naz", and "Gator". He got to watch his grandson Taylor play a football game this past fall and never missed a published game of Ethan's; watching them was his happiness. Most recently, he got to meet his newest great granddaughter, Laramie in which he had to take a "nap" with her right away.  But nobody had his heart like the Cannonator. Wes loved his friends, Jeff, Randy, Steve, Russ, Tony, and always enjoyed a cup of coffee together where he offered his little silly advice for them. He always had a special hug and love for his sister-in-law, Nila and always made her feel special.  Wes loved kids and always had candy in his pocket for them, he was famous for his sour candies.

Mary and Wes would have been married 41 years this coming September. He always managed to make their anniversaries special without a lot of money. He always put his wife first and did it selflessly; he loved Mary and she will greatly miss him.  Wes and Mary also played Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus a many number of years after the passing of their son, Ben.

Wes is survived by the love of his life Mary, his daughter, Virginia Dargatz and the love of her life, Clay Peck; his beloved grandkids, Jordann (Tyler) Heald, Taylor Metter, Ethan Dargatz, Anna Dargatz, and Allison Walker; his two great-grandkids, Cannon Gene and Laramie James Heald; six brothers, Mike Brist, Harry Brist, Colonel Brist, Admiral Brist, Major Brist, and "little" brother Todd Brist; many many nieces and nephews, and his special dog, Rusty. He was preceded in passing by his parents, Bennie and Gladys Brist; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bob and Ida Miedema; and his only son, Benjamin Robert Brist. He is now in heaven with his beloved son, Ben.
