Wendell Erwin West, age 90, of Huron, SD, passed away on Saturday, August 24, 2013, at the Huron Regional Medical Center. His Graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 29, at the Onida Cemetery in Onida, SD, with the Rev. Jeff Adel officiating and Military Honors by the American Legion Sully Post #79. Wendell Erwin West, the son of Fred and Mary Jane (Staton) West, was born on November 2, 1922, in Isabel, SD. He attended school and graduated from Onida High School in 1939. Wendell served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was honorably discharged on May 23, 1946. Wendell worked as an Animal Nutritionist for the Standard Chemical Company for many years until his retirement in 1986. Wendell married Delores Rilling on January 22, 1946, in Onida, SD. Wendell lived in Onida, SD until 1958 when he moved to Theodosa, MO. He then moved to Clear Lake, SD, in 1960 and Miller, SD, in 1962. After his retirement in 1986, Wendell moved to Huron, SD. Wendell was a member of the VFW and the American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, music, and entertaining. Grateful for having shared in Wendell's life are his wife, Delores of Huron, SD; two sons, Rodney West of Colorado Springs, CO, and Robert (Sandy) West of Chamberlain, SD; seven grandchildren, Matt, Alison, Derek, Denise, Mike, Rob, and Marchele West; three great-grandchildren, two brothers, Lowell (Odie) and Catherine West of Pierre, SD, and Melvin and Denise West of Renton, WA; and several nieces and nephews. Wendell was preceded in death by his parents; son, Dennis West; granddaughter, Jill West; two brothers, Harold and Sterling West; and two sisters, Nora and Gladys West.
