Obituary

Britton- Warren J. "Pete" Spicer, age 81, of Britton, SD formerly of Wessington, SD, died Friday, January 18, 2008 at his home in Britton, SD. His funeral service will be at 10:30 AM Thursday, January 24, 2008 at the First Presbyterian Church in Wessington with the Rev. Allen Sager officiating. Burial will be at the Wessington Cemetery with Military Rites by the Watson-Krauter American Legion Post #110 of Wessington. Visitation will be Wednesday from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Welter Funeral Home or one hour prior to the service at the church Thursday morning. The family will be present from 6:00 PM to 8:00PM at the funeral home Wednesday night. Warren J. Spicer, was born on April 5, 1926 to E. Lawrence and Edith (Gamble) Spicer on the farm near Wessington. He attended Whiteside township grade school in rural Wessington. Warren married Elaine Nielson on June 7, 1953 at the Sunbeam Church in rural St. Lawrence. His brother, the Rev. Donald Spicer, married them. Warren farmed on the family farm in rural Wessington for most of his life. Elaine died in October of 1998, and Warren moved to Britton SD in 2002. Warren served in the United States Airforce during World War II and was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion in Wessington. He was a member of the Tipton Community Church and the First Presbyterian Churches in both Wessington and Britton. Warren was also active in the Senior Citizens Center in Wessington. Warren and his family were very active in 4-H for many years. Warren enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, going on picnics, and spending time with his family. Warren always had time to visit. Grateful for having shared Warren's life are his two sons, John (Mary) Spicer, Britton, SD and Gary (Trude) Spicer, Wessington, SD; two daughters, Gloria (David) Jones , Hartford, SD and Linda (Larry) Wegleitner, Huron, SD; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren;two brothers, Donald (Elizabeth) Spicer, O'Neill, NE, and Lyle (Ruth) Spicer, Hot Springs, SD; and special friend, Ruby Sandvig, Britton, SD. Warren was preceeded in death by his parents; his wife, Elaine in 1998; a daughter Joyce Marie Spicer; and his sister Doris Green.
