Obituary

Ward H. Evans, age 93, of 1345 Michigan Ave. SW, Huron, died Tuesday, June 27, 2006, at the Huron Nursing Home. His funeral service will be at 2:00 PM Friday, June 30, at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Richard rinearson officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday afternoon and evening and Friday morning at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Friday afternoon. The family will be present from 7:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday evening at the funeral home. Ward H. Evans was born on November 17, 1912, to Rev. Gwilym and Bethel (Eaton) Evans at woonsocket, SD. As a child he moved with his parents to wessington Springs, SD, where he graduated from high school in 1930. He worked for Swanders Bakery in Huron until the time of his marriage. On June 20, 1937, Ward married Jessie Jones at Huron. The couple moved to Utah where Ward drove an oil transport truck. At the start of World War II, Ward entered the Merchant Marines and served in the Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged following the war and he and Jessie moved to Pierre, SD, where they owned and operated a bakery. In 1957, they moved to a farm north of Huron where they resided and operated the farm (livestock) until 1975 when they moved into Huron. Ward became a resident of the Huron Nursing Home on March 17, 2006. Ward and Jessie celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary this year in 2006. He was a member of the William reaves American Legion Post #7 of Huron, and the First United Methodist Church. His many interests included traveling with Jessie, hunting, piloting airplanes, hobby farming, and gardening. He is survived by his wife, Jessie of Huron; 1 sister, Mary Ellen Hegstrum of Sioux Falls; 16 nieces and nephews; and numerous great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers, Allen Evans and Donald Evans; and 1 sister, Helen Evans.
