Obituary

Virginia Hansen, age 84, of Huron, formerly of Wessington, died Saturday, February 4, 2012 at SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron. Her funeral will be 11:00 am Friday, February 17, 2012 at First Presbyterian Church in Wessington including an American Legion Watson-Krauter Post #110 Auxiliary service, with burial at Greenlawn Cemetery at Redfield, SD. Visitation with family present will be 6-8 pm Thursday, February 16, 2012 at Welter Funeral Home with a 6:30 pm prayer service; or one hour prior to the service. Virginia Mae Hansen was born October 16, 1927 to James and Sadie (DeVriendt) Garner in Vayland, SD. She graduated from Wessington High School in 1945. Virginia married Hobart Sass on March 10, 1947 in Huron. She stayed home to raise their family until his passing in 1963. She started working at the Wessington Schools in the cafeteria and at Shoemakers Creamery. Later on June 29, 1965, Virginia married Chester Hansen in Wolsey. Finally, she took a job at the Senior Center in Wessington and worked there for 16 years before she retired. Virginia was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wessington, First Presbyterian Women, American Legion Watson-Krauter Post #110 Auxiliary, the Wessington Senior Center and the Royal Neighbors of America. She enjoyed many hobbies including puzzles, playing cards, and loved dancing. Virginia never met a stranger; she would talk to almost anyone. Virginia is survived by her two children, Roger (Betty) Sass, Toni (Merlan) Smith, both of Huron; one grandson; one granddaughter; three step grandsons; two step granddaughters; one great granddaughter; six step great grandsons; three step great granddaughters, 1 step great-great granddaughter; sisters-in-law, June Garner on San Diego, CA, and Ardith Garner of Owatonna, MN, and many nieces and nephews. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; husbands Hobart Sass in 1963, Chester Hansen in 1988; three brothers, Walter, Eugene, and Robert (Marge); a sister, Ellen Sass; one grandchild; and one niece.
