Obituary

V iola Mae (Gascoigne)  Manning at the young age of 90 passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on January 6, 2017. Her funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday, January 14, 2017 at the Welter Funeral Home, with burial at the Riverside Cemetery.

Her visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until the start of the funeral at the funeral home on Saturday.

Viola was born November 24, 1926 to LeRoy Gascoigne and Hazel R. Smith in Huron.  She attended grade school through middle school in Huron until 1942 when her family moved to Ogden, Utah. She graduated from Ogden High School in 1945. While attending school she worked for the government at the Ogden Arsenal from 1943 to 1946 during World War II. On February 21, 1946 she was married to Claude B. Manning. They lived in California where she worked as an accounting clerk in Los Angeles and at the Inyokern Naval Base. She lived in Utah and Idaho before returning to Huron in 1951.

Viola joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in July 1953. She and Claude were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple October 11.1960 in Salt Lake City, Utah.  She worked for Northwestern Public Service for 36 years retiring January 1988. Later she worked as a merchandiser for Powerforce, Answer Unlimited and News America from 1993 to 2000.

As a member of her church she served in various positions. Relief Society and Young Women's President, a teacher in Relief Society, Primary, Sunday School and as a visiting teaching. She and her husband served as temple workers in the Chicago Temple, in Chicago Illinois for 18 months where she was a member of the temple choir. They also served at the Winter Quarter Temple in Omaha, Nebraska and the Bismarck Temple in Bismarck, North Dakota.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Claude, Son Claude Jr. (Rusty), and grandson Marc Sullins.


She is survived by her two daughters Sherrie (Mark) Laidler of Orem Utah and Audra (Cory) Jenkins of Springfield Missouri, Daughter in Law Mary (Rusty) Manning of Bossier City Louisiana, brother LeRoy (Penny) Gascoigne of Fairburn South Dakota. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
