Obituary

Viola Hins, age 96, of Huron, formerly of Wessington Springs, SD passed away on Thursday, October 1, 2015 at the SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron. Her funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 5, 2015 at the First Presbyterian Church in Huron, SD, with burial at the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Her visitation, with the family present, will be from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, October 4, at the Welter Funeral Home in Huron, with a prayer service to begin at 6:30 p.m.; or one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Viola Gladys Fischer, the daughter of Theodore "Tater" and Sophia (Freese) Fischer was born on March 21, 1919 in Bates Township of Hand County. She attended grade school in Bates Township and graduated from Wessington Springs High School. Viola then attended college in Wessington Springs and received her teaching certificate. Viola married Homert Hins on June 11, 1939 at the Rose Hill Presbyterian Church in rural Hand County. They were the first marriage in the church. The couple made their home on the family farm for 45 years until their retirement. They then moved to Wessington Springs and lived there for 23 years. Viola moved to Huron on May 3, 2010. Viola was a member of the Rose Hill Presbyterian Church and was active in the church for 66 years. Viola was also active on the Bates Township School Board and voting clerk. She was also a member of the PEO and Women's Golf League. Viola loved gardening, growing flowers, and watching birds. She loved playing games and cards with her family and friends. Viola and Homert spent many good times in their camper, traveling, and fishing at the river. Grateful for having shared in Viola's life are her two sons, Dennis (Sandra) Hins of Nisswa, MN and Ron (Jill) Hins of Huron, SD; five grandchildren, David (Holly) Hins of Farmington, MN, Corey (Angie) Hins of Brainerd, MN, Michelle (Todd) Hins-Johnson of Gilbert, AZ, Lindsey (Charles) Brewer of Wessington, SD, and Tater Hins of Huron, SD; nine great-grandchildren: Allec Hins, Haley Hins, Caden Hins, Maddie Hins, Macyn Hins, Julia Johnson, Alice Johnson, Charleigh Brewer, and Talley Hins; two sisters, Beverly Powell and Leona Ragones; sister-in-law, Dorothy Plate; and several nieces and nephews. Viola was preceded in death by her parents, Theodore and Sophia; her husband of 66 years Homert in 2005; brother, Russell Fischer; and two brother-in-laws.
