Obituary

Viola Schager, age 83, of Huron, SD, died Friday, March 23, 2012, at Violet Tschetter Memorial Home. Her funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 31, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish with burial at St. Paul's Catholic Cemetery, Iroquois. Visitation with family present will be Friday, March 30, from 6-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with a rosary service at 7:00 p.m.; or Saturday morning one hour prior to the service at the church. Vi Schager was born Viola Marie Vogelman, daughter of William and Hazel (Reilly) Vogelman, on July 23, 1928, in Huron, SD. The family was living in Iroquois, SD, at the time of her birth and while growing up she attended school in Iroquois and graduated from Iroquois High School in 1946. She then attended Huron College majoring in bookkeeping. In 1950, Vi married Curtis Schager in Huron. They were stationed in Ft. Hood, TX for several years, and then settled in Huron. They were divorced in 1961. Vi married Penn Stonefield in 1963. They moved to Lake Preston. Following their divorce Vi moved back to Huron. In Huron Vi worked as a bookkeeper for Huron Credit Bureau for many years; in the office of the Beadle County Register of Deeds for many years; bookkeeper for the Huron Area Senior Center; instructor for Tri-Chem Craft Supplies; and distributor for Amway Products. During her work career Vi also worked at the South Dakota State Fair in Huron as the Main Gate ticket supervisor. She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish (St. Martin Catholic Church); life member of Huron Area Senior Center; member of VFW Forrest McMullen Post #1776 Auxiliary; member and past officer of the Ladies of the Moose Lodge; and member of Catholic Daughters. Following her retirement Vi volunteered at St. Martin Catholic School until its closing; Holy Trinity Catholic School; and Huron Area Senior Center. Her interests included fishing in her younger years; singing; dancing; Bingo; traveling with her children; and yard work. Over the years Vi enjoyed making crafts and selling them at craft fairs, and following her retirement 1991 at the age of 63, she owned and operated Vi's Kraft Knook. On November 30, 2009, Vi became a resident of Violet Tschetter Memorial Home in Huron. Vi is survived by 3 daughters, Janet (Steve) Becker of Hot Springs, SD, Karen (Joe) Reilly of Huron, and Linda (Larry) Bartel of Glasgow, MT; 9 grandchildren, Stephen (Gabrielle) Becker, William Becker, Jeremy (Regan) Bartel, Kristy (Darren) Ausdemore, and Stacey (Eric) Larson, Amanda Schager; 3 step-grandchildren, Clinton Reilly, Adam (Cara) Reilly, Brian (Bobbie) Reilly; 9 great grandchildren; 1 brother, Bill (Estella) Vogelman of Nickerson, MN; 4 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and several aunts and uncles.
