Vesta Fritz, age 93, of rural Cavour, SD, died Wednesday, June 16, 2010, at Huron Regional Medical Center.
Her funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 21, at American Lutheran Church with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Visitation will be Sunday from 1-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with family present from 6-8 p.m.; or Monday morning one hour prior to the service.
Vesta Fritz was born Vesta Opal Montgomery, daughter of George and Emma (Hein) Montgomery, on July 18, 1916, on the family farm at rural Cavour, SD. She attended country school through eighth grade. She attended Northwest College of Commerce in Huron for one year and received a business certificate for mastering the check printer machine.
She worked at the Sprague Hospital; and Armour & Company for 2 winters. She moved to Seattle, WA, during World War II where she lived for 9 months working at the Boeing Aircraft plant as a varnisher.
She returned to the family farm and worked for her parents where she operated teams of horses, tractors, and shocked, all until the time of her marriage.
On January 21, 1953, Vesta married Walter Fritz in Pipestone, MN. They moved to the farm that Walt owned in rural Iroquois. Walt died on August 20, 1973. Vesta also worked at the Plains Restaurant as a salad maker until her retirement in 1981. She continued to live on the farm until 1988 when she moved back to her mothers farm to help care for her mother. Vesta lived there until the time of her death.
She was a past member of Pearl Creek Methodist Church when she was a child until she was a young woman; a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Iroquois; past member of Pioneer Daughters; Royal Neighbors; the Birthday Club; and the W.H.Y. Club of Sanborn County.
Her many interests included gardening, canning, sewing, tatting, crocheting, embroidery, needle work, and farm life.
Vesta is survived by one daughter, Franny Fritz of rural Iroquois; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter in 1973; and a daughter, Jean Fritz in 1982.
