Versal Krause, age 93, a former resident of Huron and Wessington, died Thursday, August 21, 2008, at Maryhouse in Pierre. His funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 26, at the First Presbyterian Church at Wessington with burial at the Wessington Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 1 to 8 p.m. at the Welter Funeral Home with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a Prayer Service at 7 p.m.; or Tuesday morning one hour prior to the service at the church. Carl Versal Krause was born December 27, 1914, at Winside, Neb., the only child of Herman F. and Mary Elizabeth (Minnie Wiand) Krause. The family moved to South Dakota in 1917, where they farmed south of Wessington in Sand Creek Township. Versal was educated there, graduating from Sand Creeks consolidated high school in 1932 as valedictorian. He married Mabel Agnes Bonnes December 12, 1936, in the American Lutheran Church at Huron. Together, Versal and Mabel operated the family farm where they lived until 1977, when they moved into Wessington. They moved to Huron in 1994. In March 2005, Versal moved to Pierre to be closer to his family, where he lived first at Kellys Retirement Home and later at Maryhouse. Versal had many hobbies, and especially enjoyed working with wood. His skills in carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work were put to good use on the farm and helping out his neighbors. He served as a township supervisor for nearly 25 years. He also served on the Sand Creek School Board and as an officer of the Wessington Cemetery Association. He was a member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church at Wessington. He was employed at the South Dakota State Fair for 18 years as concessions superintendent. Versal and his wife also volunteered as campground hosts at Farm Island State Recreation Area near Pierre. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Janelle and Dan Toman, Pierre; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel, on Oct. 4, 2004, and his parents.
