Verna D. Weston, age 91, of 1345 Michigan Ave SW, Huron, died Thursday, April 19, 2007 at the Huron Nursing Home. Her graveside rites will be at 2:00 PM Tuesday, April 24th at Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call Monday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home. Verna Weston was born Verna D. Gitchell on September 26, 1915, to Tracy and Anna Laura (Christensen) Gitchell at Huron. She attended grade school in Huron and graduated from Huron High School. Verna was employed at Nash Finch Company of Huron for a number of years. On August 30, 1940, Verna married Thomas E. Weston Jr. in Huron. They lived in Huron until 1950, Pipestone, Minnesota until 1952, and then Sioux Falls until 1956 when they returned to Huron and she has lived here since that time. For a number of years she was employed with the South Dakota State Highway Patrol as a secretary and as a dispatcher for State Police radio. Her husband Thomas died on January 12, 1988. She was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star, a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Huron and enjoyed traveling with her husband, reading, crocheting, and watching baseball and tennis. She is survived by her son, Thomas E. (Debbie) Weston of Warren, MI; her daughter, Claudia Rusty Hartley of Excelsior, MN; 2 grandchildren both of Seattle, WA; 2 great grandchildren; 1 brother M. Tracy (Lois) Gitchell of Huron; and 3 nieces and 1 nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Tom and her sister Lois Anhorn.
