Vern Olmsted, age 72, of Huron, passed away on Thursday, August 17, 2023 at Huron Regional Medical Center in Huron. Visitation will be from 3-5 P.M., on Tuesday, August 22, 2023 at Welter Funeral Home in Huron. A private burial will be held at St. Martin Catholic Cemetery in Huron.

Vern Stanley Olmsted was born on April 17, 1951 in Huron to parents William and Clara (Lewandowski) Olmsted. He attended St. Theresa's Catholic School and graduated from Huron High School in 1969. He married Janelle Fenner at St. Martin's Catholic Church on November 24, 1973. Vern worked as a brakeman and conductor for the railroad for many years.

Vern was an experienced mechanic and had a wealth of knowledge to share with others on any car. He loved old muscle cars and especially enjoyed restoring muscle cars. He also enjoyed racing, including drag racing. He was always happy working in his garage. He was a member of the National Hot Rod Association and Holy Trinity Catholic Parish.

He is survived by his wife, Janelle of Huron; his daughter, Angie Olmsted of Huron; and his grandson, Ashton Flowers of Brookings; his sister, Carolyn (Robert) Krull of Bryant; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
