Obituary

Verla Kellar, age 72, of Sioux Falls, and formerly of Huron, SD, died Friday, September 4, 2009, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Her funeral service will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 9, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with family present and a Rosary Service at 7 p.m.; or Wednesday afternoon one hour prior to the service at the church.

Verla Kellar was born Verla Mae Phillips, daughter of Edward and Marjorie Viola (Peterson) Phillips, on May 17, 1937, on the family farm in Willow Lake, SD. She graduated from Willow Lake High School in 1955.

On March 5, 1957, Verla married Dale Kellar in Sioux Falls. In 1957, the couple lived in Fulda, MN. Verla worked at the Sibley Egg and Poultry Company; in 1963 in Sibley, IA. In 1976 she commuted to Des Moines where she worked for the Federal Government as a meat inspector; Verla moved to Huron in 1978 where she continued as an inspector at Huron Dressed Beef and the Packing Plant. Verla retired in 1989 due to ill health. In 1991, Verla and Dale sold their home in Huron, purchased an RV, and have been wintering in Arizona during the cold months and traveling the United States during the warm months.

Verla was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Huron; and joined the Moose Lodge in Arizona in 2005. She enjoyed crocheting, bowling, playing cards, eating out, and was a champion shuffleboard player.

She is survived by her husband, Dale of Huron; 1 son, Daniel (Vicki) Kellar of Sioux Falls; 1 daughter, Janet (Mike) Sorensen of Medford, MN; 6 grandchildren, Joshua Kellar, Jessica Kellar, Chance Kellar, Nicholas Sorensen, Ashley Krohn, and Amber Sorensen; 1 brother; and 3 sisters-in-law, Leona Phillips of Redfield, Ruby Phillips of Watertown, and Edith Phillips of Huron.

She was preceded in death by her parents; 2 brothers, Ron Phillips and Gary Phillips; 1 sister, Donna Schinderling; 2 step brothers, Ted Phillips and Horace Phillips; 1 step sister, Berniece Austin; 1 brother-in-law, Robert Schinderling; and 1 step brother-in-law, Chet Austin.
