Vera Phillips, age 90, of Huron, SD, went home to the Lord on Friday, February 18, 2011, at her home.
Her memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 22, at American Lutheran Church with burial of her cremated remains in the springtime at Frankfort City Cemetery.
There will be no visitation.
Vera Phillips was born Vera Joyce Schone, daughter of Henry and Blanche (McDowell) Schone, on January 12, 1921, in rural Frankfort, SD. She attended school in Frankfort.
On May 28, 1939, Vera married Harry Phillips in Frankfort. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Redfield where Vera lived while Harry served his country during World War II. When Harry was discharged they returned to Frankfort and opened and operated a caf. In 1948 Harry and Vera moved to Redfield where they also opened and operated a caf. They moved to Huron in 1951. Vera was a homemaker who devoted all of her younger years to raising her family.
She was a founding member of the Yada Yada Club; and attended American Lutheran Church.
Her many interests included attending car races and watching NASCAR on television; taking group trips to local casinos with her many friends; doing crafts; playing cards especially Solitaire; and thoroughly enjoying all of the holidays when she could cook for her family.
She is survived by her children, Bob (Cindy Peterson) Phillips of Sioux City, IA, Virginia (Monte) Stienblock of Huron, Barb (Wayne) Songer of Huron, Connie Johnson of Nevada, IA, and Becky (Mark) Berquist of Huron. 12 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren. Vera was also considered a mother and grandmother to the many friends of her children.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harry on March 5, 1972; 2 sons, Greg Phillips and Dallas Phillips; a brother, Gordon (Hazel) Schone; and an infant sister, Vivian Schone.
