Obituary

Velma M. Matter, age 92, of 1345 Michigan Ave SW, Huron died Friday, March 4, 2005, at her residence. Her funeral service will be at 2:00 PM Monday, March 7th at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Iroquois with Kathy Hibbert officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Friends may call Sunday evening or Monday morning at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Monday afternoon. Velma Matter was born Velma Mannetta Burma on July 18, 1912, to John and Lucy (Montgomery) Burma on the family farm near Lennox. In the spring of 1918, the family moved to a farm in Pearl Creek Township south of Cavour. In 1922 the family spent the year in Lennox and McMinnville, TN, returning the end of the year to Lennox, and then back to Pearl Creek Township. After completing grade school Velma attended Lenox High School for two years and graduated from Cavour High School in 1930. She attended Morningside College in Sioux City for a year and then finished her two year teaching certificate the following year at Northern State College. Following the completion of her certificate she taught at the Oldenburg School in Pearl Creek Township. On October 12, 1935, Velma married Earl Matter at the home of her parents. They lived on the same farm in Pearl Creek Township their entire married life. Earl passed away on January 9, 1977. Velma continued to make her home there until moving to Huron about four years ago. Velma was active in community service and served as a 4-H leader for 40 years and served on the Beadle County Extension Board as well as the state Extension Board for many years. She was an RSVP volunteer at Cavour School for many years. She was also a recipient of the Lusk Award. Velma was a member of Belle Prairie Immanuel Lutheran Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher for 17 years and was active in the Ladies Aid. Those who knew Velma will remember her for her bread baking as well as her sewing as these were interests that she spent hours doing. Survivors include a daughter, Jan (Larry) Winkelman of Bruce, SD; two sons, Vern (Connie) Matter of Franklin, WI and Carl (Linda) Matter of Cavour; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Delia Dunham of Iroquois; a sister-in-law, Elaine Burma of Huron; four nieces, three nephews, cousins, and a host of other family and friends. Velma was preceded in death by her husband Earl, a daughter Carol (Carls twin sister), parents, and her brother, Bernard Burma.
