Obituary

Velma E. Huber, age 85, of Huron, died Thursday, July 21, 2011, at the Huron Regional Medical Center. Her Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 25, 2011, at the First United Methodist Church in Huron with burial at the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Huron, SD. Her visitation will be from 1-8 p.m. Sunday, July 24, at the Welter Funeral Home in Huron, with the family present from 6-8 p.m., and a prayer service to begin at 7:00 p.m. Sunday night; or one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Velma E. Ambacher, the daughter of William and Emma (Wetlaufer) Ambacher, was born on January 9, 1926, in Tulare, SD. She attended school and graduated from Tulare High School. Velma married Earl R. Huber on October 1, 1948 in Alexandria, SD. Velma worked as a switchboard operator and housekeeper for St. John's Hospital (HRMC) for many years before retiring. She also worked as a housekeeper for many private homes. Velma was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Huron. She was a member of the American Legion Women's Auxilliary, the VFW Women's Auxiliary, and the Marine Corps League Auxiliary. Velma was also a member of the Moose Lodge. Velma loved to do puzzles, puzzlebooks, and reading. She especially liked baking with, and for, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and family. Velma was also an avid Twins and Vikings fan. Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Earl, of Huron, SD; 2 sons, Ervin (Kerry) Huber, of Huron, SD, and Vernon (Gail) Huber of Virginia Beach, VA; 2 daughters, Deborah (Larry) Sweany, of Watertown, SD, and Judy (fiance, Richard Bryant) Toelle, of Pierre, SD; 11 grandchildren: Cory (Erika) Huber, Toby, Brenden, and Devan Huber, Stacy (Jeff) Dougherty, Mike (Janice) Sweany, Andy (Christina) Sweany, and Katie, Val, Chris, and Sam Huber.; 7 great-grandchildren: Daynon, Mattie, Bryn, and Tyce Huber, Kaela and Robert Dougherty, and Alexis Sweany; 2 brothers, Paul (Mary) Ambacher, of Arizona, and Clyde (Lois) Ambacher, of Washington; and several nieces and nephews. Velma was preceded in death by her parents; 2 sisters, Eleanor Bea and Arlin Houghtaling; great-grandson, Dominic Huber; and 2 sons and 1 daughter in infancy.
