Valla Vee Baum, age 87, of 1345 Michigan Ave. SW, and formerly of 375 Dakota Ave. S, Huron, died Thursday, July 14, 2005, at the Huron Nursing Home. Her funeral service will be at 2:00 PM Monday, July 18, at the Congregational United Church of Christ with Rev. James Schatz officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday afternoon and evening and Monday morning at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Monday afternoon. Valla Vee Baum was born Valla Vee Wood on October 3, 1917, to Ernest B. and Mary Rogers (Parkhurst) Wood at Huron, SD. She attended Wilson Elementary School and Huron Public School, graduating from Huron High School in 1936. In 1939, Valla Vee graduated from Sprague School of Nursing in Huron. She moved to St. Paul, MN, and was employed in the surgery department at a St. Paul hospital. On June 24, 1941, Valla Vee married Christie Baum at Tyler, MN. They lived in the following cities, Chippewa Falls, WI, San Diego, CA, and Medford, OR, where she worked in the surgery department at those hospitals. She returned to Huron in 1954 and has lived here since except for a short time in 1976 when they lived in Tempe, AZ. From 1956 to 1971 she worked for Dr. William Kilpatrick at the Huron Clinic and from 1971 to 1984 she was employed as a nurse for Dr. H. L. Saylor, Jr. She was a member the Congregational United Church of Christ, for 75 years and was active in the womens fellowship, Business and Professional Women, RSVP, YWCA, and a member of the South Dakota Nurses Association. She is survived by one son, Jon (Jan) Baum of Huron; two daughters, Mary (Paul) Aylward and Jane (Darrell) Raschke, both of Huron; five grandchildren, Chris (Doug) Stahly of Cavour, Angie (Bill) Schultz of Sioux Falls, Julie (Dan) Domandle of Omaha, NE, Jenny Baum of Sioux Falls and her fianc Mike Crank, Al Raschke of Brookings; five great grandchildren, Spencer and Mason Stahly, Emma Schultz, and Jack and Hannah Domandle; and one sister, Thais Buchholtz of Minneapolis, MN. She was preceded in death by her husband on August 1, 1987; her parents; and one brother, Parkhurst Wood.
