Theresa Meier, age 86, of Huron, died Monday, March 26, 2012 at Huron Regional Medical Center. Her funeral will be 10:00 am Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Huron with burial at St. Martin's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be from 6-8 pm Monday, April 2, 2012 at Welter Funeral Home with a scripture service at 7:00 pm; or one hour prior to the service. Theresa Catherine Meier was born January 21, 1926, at Faulkton, SD, to Phillip & Mary (Schneider) Meier. She was the youngest of six children. Her parents came from Nebraska and settled in Hand County, SD. She grew up on her parents' homestead and went to country school in Harrison Township. After Theresa's father passed away in 1955, she moved with her mother to Miller, SD, where she was employed as a child care worker. In 1965, after her mother passed away, she moved to Huron, SD, where she was employed mainly as a caregiver for elderly people. After spending more than 40 years in Huron, she moved to Pierre in 2008 and resided at Parkwood Apartments where she could attend daily Mass in Maryhouse Chapel. This was a wonderful place to spend her later years, as her life had always centered around Mass, the Sacraments, and prayer. However, the Pierre flood of 2011 caused an evacuation and a move back to Huron, where she resided at Violet Tschetter Memorial Home and two assisted-living facilities. Theresa was a member of Holy Trinity Parish and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She had a generous spirit of giving, faithfully supported many religious organizations and missions, and freely donated her time as a volunteer in various ways, such as working at the St. Francis Shop in Huron. Theresa will be greatly missed by her relatives and friends that survive her, as she was a real presence in all their lives. Left to cherish her memory are three nephews, David Meier of Minneapolis, MN, Duane (Linda) Meier of Honolulu, HI, Robert Schaefer of Orient, SD; two nieces, Judy (Terry) Sorensen of Emmetsburg, IA, Linda (Herman) Kindle of Pierre, SD, four grand-nephews, Jamie(Annette) & Mark Sorensen, David & Kevin Meier; four grand-nieces, Kimberly (Kevin) Nachreiner, Michelle (Tom) Skoog, Kelly (Justin) Hipple, Tonia (Brock) Householder; six great-grand-nephews, Isaac, Micah, Jeriah, & Elias Sorensen and Konnor & Karson Nachreiner; and six great-grand-nieces: Hannah, Selah, Brie, & Charis Sorensen and Grace & Hope Skoog. Theresa was the last one remaining in her generation of the family. Preceding her in death were her parents; her brother and her four sisters, Leo (Olive) Meier, Rose Meier, Helen (Joe) Kramps, Louise (Bernard) Wherry, and Margaret (Lawrence) Schaefer.
