Thais Buchholtz, age 95, of Huron, SD, passed away on Friday, September 19, 2014, at the Huron Regional Medical Center. Her funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Huron with burial at the Riverside Cemetery in Huron. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, September 23, at the Welter Funeral Home; or one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Mary Thais Wood, the daughter of Ernest B. and Mary Rogers (Parkhurst) Wood, was born on February 28, 1919 in Huron, SD. She attended Huron High School. In 1936 Thais moved to Minneapolis, MN and attended beautician school. Thais managed the Fanny Farmer Candy Store in Minneapolis for a number of years. She also worked as a switchboard operator for the Normandy Hotel and at Twin City Bottle for a time. Thais was also a nanny for many children until she turned 82. Thais moved back to Huron in 2012. Thais married Jim Buchholtz on June 7, 1952 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. Thais attended the Congregational United Church of Christ. She was the longest standing member of the VFW Women's Auxiliary in Minneapolis, MN, member of the Senior Federation, and a lifelong Democrat. Thais enjoyed traveling and went on many different cruises. Thais also went on a hot air balloon ride at the age of 85. Thais loved to help children through the Coats for Kids Program and the Ronald MacDonald House. Grateful for having shared in Thais' life are her three nieces, Jane (Darrell) Raschke and Mary (Paul) Aylward, both of Huron, SD, and Ruth (Wallace Long) Wood of Juneau, AK; three nephews, Jon (Jan) Baum of Huron, SD, and Christopher (Cindy) Wood and Bruce Wood, both of Nashville, TN; and several great nephews and great nieces. Thais was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Parkhurst Wood; sister, Valla Vee Baum; brother-in-law, Christie Baum; and sister-in-law, Jane Wood.
