Sylvia Dixon, age 71, of 565 Wisconsin Ave. NW, Huron, SD, died Sunday, October 11, 2009, at her home.
Her funeral mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 16, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday from 1-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with family present from 6-8 p.m.; or Friday morning one hour prior to the service at the church.
Sylvia Dixon was born Sylvia Margaret Dooley on December 31, 1937, to John Jack and Stella (Jensen) Dooley, in Madison, SD. The family was living on the family farm in Ramona at the time of her birth. She grew up on the family farm and attended school in Ramona and, although she completed all of her course-work half-way through her senior year, she waited until the end of the school year to graduate with her class from Ramona High School in 1955.
On March 27, 1955, Sylvia married Jim Dixon in Pipestone, MN. The couple lived in South Carolina and Georgia during the time that Jim was in the service until his discharge in 1957.
In 1958, they moved to St. Paul, MN, where they lived until 1960 when they came to Huron.
Sylvia worked for Taco Johns as an assistant manager for several years. In 1976 she began working for the post office as a substitute rural letter carrier. In the 1980s she became a full time rural letter carrier and worked until her retirement in 1999.
She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish; St. Martin Catholic Church Altar Society; volunteered at St. Martin Catholic Church/School for many years and also Holy Trinity; SDLCA (South Dakota Letter Carriers Association); past president for 2 years of the SDLCA Womens Auxiliary; and SDRLCA (South Dakota Rural Letter Carriers Association).
Her many interests included reading; crossword puzzles; fishing; hunting; and attending the grandchildrens sporting events.
She is survived by her husband, Jim of Huron; 1 son, Jeff Dixon of Duncannon, PA; 1 daughter, Susan Henderson of Huron; 9 grandchildren; Shawnitae (David) Shields, Dannelle Dixon, James Dixon, Eric Dixon, Shaun Henderson, Tre Henderson, Regina Dixon, Brian Dixon, and Kaddie Dixon; 9 great grandchildren; 1 sister, Janice (John) Cassutt of Sioux Falls; and 1 daughter-in-law, Alice Dixon of Madison, SD.
She was preceded in death by her parents; 1 son, Ronnie Dixon; and an infant brother.
