Shirley Knutson, age 90, of Huron, passed away on Monday, July 20, 2026 at Avantara. Her funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 24, 2026, at American Lutheran Church in Huron, with burial to follow at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Huron. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Friday morning at the church.
Shirley Ann Knutson was born on November 7, 1935 in Woonsocket to William and Magdalena (Kludt) Hansen. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She went to country grade school and graduated from Woonsocket High School in 1953. She took a secretarial course from Northwest College of Commerce in Huron.
Shirley married Marvin Knutson on May 15, 1955 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Sanborn County. They lived in Woonsocket their first year of marriage and in Huron their remaining years. They had two special daughters named Robin and Lori, who they loved to take with them on many fishing and camping trips.
Shirley worked for the Farmers and Merchants Bank in Huron. She also worked at Huron Junior High School and Huron Regional Medical Center as a personal secretary until retiring in 1988.
She was an active member of the American Lutheran Church and Church circle for many years. She loved her church. She and her husband were members of the Beadle Bums camping group. She was a member of the Huron Senior Center and Huron Lioness group where she was chosen Lioness of the Year and Outstanding Lioness awards. She enjoyed camping and playing the piano and playing cards. She and Marvin took many bus tours. They traveled to Arizona for 11 years and would stay in their camper for 3 months. Shirley also enjoyed volunteering for the church, Huron Senior Center, HRMC Auxiliary, and Huron RSVP every week.
She is survived by her loving daughters, Robin and Lori, both of Huron; brother Duane (Mary Ann) Hansen of Mitchell; sister Jan (Ken) Huber of Texas; and eight nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Marvin in 2014, two sisters Delores Moilan and Norma Spelbring; three brothers and sisters-in-law, John (Darlene) Hansen, LeRoy (Sharon) Hansen and Bill (Beverly) Hansen; three nieces and one nephew.
