Selma M. Johnson was born on February 17, 1927 in Jasper, Minnesota to parents Albert and Anna (Hansen) Johnson. She attended District 29 Country School in Brookings County and high school in Jasper where she lived with her Grandma Hansen graduating in 1945.
Selma married Harold E. Laabs on January 1, 1946 in Hendricks, Minnesota. Harold and Selma lived at Clara City, MN and White, SD before moving to Huron in the fall of 1946. In 1963 the couple moved to Carpenter, South Dakota. They moved back to Huron in 2007.
Through the years, Selma worked at various stores and restaurants. She worked at Armour's and Co, Hagar's Produce, Montgomery Wards, Tempo and finally her favorite place, Huron Regional Medical Center for 20 years, where she retired from. She then began her volunteer years at many places in the Huron community. She volunteered at Huron Nursing Home as a pretend resident for training the new nurses' aides as well as escorting residents to their doctor appointments. She was a Pink Lady at HRMC for many years and was voted Pink Lady Volunteer of the Year in 2016. Also, in her career she worked at Loopy's Dollar Store straightening shelves and Burnison's Plumbing and Heating doing janitorial work.
Selma loved helping people and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to teach them to play dominoes and checkers. She loved having friends over for coffee, sharing her cookies, caramel rolls, sending cards to family and friends, and having family and friends just stop in to visit. Selma enjoyed embroidery and loved to make dish clothes for her grandchildren and great grandchildren and other special people in her life. Many friends were lucky enough to receive a jar of homemade jelly. Selma also enjoyed taking pictures and taking care of her flowers.
Selma and Harold were members of United Methodist Church of Carpenter and Riverview United Methodist Church in Huron.
Grateful for having shared in her life are her two daughters, Bonnie (Douglas) Pribyl and Marilyn (James) Schnetzer, all of Wolsey, SD; six grandchildren, Jennifer (Allen) Pickard, Matthew (Sabrina) Pribyl, Kathy (Matthew) Micheel, Vicki (Randy) Nelson, Joseph (Kelsey) Schnetzer, Teresa (Andrew) Urban; 14 great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Tucker Micheel, David and Kassandra Pickard, Selma, Rustin, and Beau Nelson, Jonah and Calab Pribyl, Simon, Kenzy, and Logan Schnetzer, Eva and Oliver Urban; and special double first cousin, Dayle Johnson.
