Sam L. Wipf, 86, died Friday, June 3, 2016 at Violet Tschetter Memorial Home in Huron.
Funeral Services for Sam will be at 10:30 am, Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at Mt. Olivet Church in Huron. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Visitation will be 5pm-7pm, Tuesday, June 7 at Welter Funeral Home.
Sam was born April 2, 1930 to Sam K. and Lydia (Tschetter) Wipf on a farm north of Huron. He attended Fairfield No. 4 School through the eighth grade.
After eighth grade he worked on the family farm and later started to work at the Swift plant.
He was a member of the Fairfield Bethel Church.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1952. After serving in the Korean Conflict, he received his Honorable Discharge in 1954. He received the Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Korean Peace Medal, Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Star, and Korean War Service Medal.
He was a life time member of Veterans of Foreign War Post #1776 and its commander in 1973-1974. He was also a life time member of American Legion Post #7, and a member of the Huron 40et8 Voiture 530.
He also worked for Armour and Co. from 1954-1983. After that he worked at Flannery's and Dakota Pork until they closed. He also worked for area farmers and helped with tree removal.
Sam was an avid gardener and enjoyed Minnesota Twins baseball.
He married Frieda Palmer on February 17, 1967
He is survived by sisters, Lilly Kern of Olivia, MN, Lorraine Kleinsasser of Wessington, and Betty (Claire) McBride of Huron; brothers, Ferd Wipf and Peter (Cheryl) Wipf of Nicholasville, KY and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Frieda on April 2, 1990; five sisters, Ruby Kleinsasser, Evelyn Maas, Susie Pullman, Anna Friesen, and Katherine Wipf; two brothers, John Wipf and Clifford Wipf.
