Obituary

Ruth B. Wood, age 98 of Chamberlain, formerly of Huron, SD passed away on Sunday, January 19, 2014 at the Sanford Mid-Dakota Care Center in Chamberlain, SD. Her funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 25, 2014, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Huron, SD, with burial at the Tulare Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday, January 24, at the Welter Funeral Home; or one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Ruth Dulany Wood was born November 30th, l915 in Sioux Falls, S.D. to John and Lucy (Binger) Dulany. Ruth's twin, Ruby, died an hour after birth. Ruth weighed 3 lb. 4 oz. at birth. Her mother made a makeshift incubator for her in a roaster set on the oven door. When Ruth was four years old her family moved to a farm by Tulare, S.D. She attended grade school and junior high in Tulare. When her parents separated she went to Redfield with her mother and graduated from high school there. After high school Ruth and a cousin went to Minneapolis, MN to attend and graduate from Paul's Beauty Academy. Ruth married Merle Hall and they moved to Niagara Falls, NY. To this union, one daughter, Dona Dae was born. They later divorced and Ruth moved back to Redfield and helped her mother with her maternity hospital during the daytime and worked at the Dakota Café. It was while working here that she met Joe H. Wood and they were married in Aberdeen in November of l939. They lived in several different places, running a service station in Salem, SD, later in Sioux Falls, SD where Joe took up painting. They moved to Hills, Minnesota and lived there for a few years and then moved to Coalville and later Layton, UT. In l958 they moved to Huron, SD. They later moved to Tulare, SD and two years after Joe's death, in l971, Ruth moved back to Huron, SD Ruth and Joe raised seven children; Dona, Launa, Patricia, Joe, Jon, Kathleen and Michell.They joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in l943 and Ruth spent her life serving in various positions of leadership and service. She loved the Relief Society organization and served as president, teacher, etc. She loved her family and her church. She spent years compiling her genealogy and has books full of information on her family going back hundreds of years Ruth was an independent lady, living alone and raising her little garden, driving to church, getting her groceries, etc. until October, 2010 when she was afflicted with shingles. That led to a fall and a fractured pelvis. She then, after being released from the hospital, moved to Mission, SD with her daughter and son-in-law, Patti, and Galen Busch. The past month was spent at the Sanford Care Center in Chamberlain where she passed away on January l9th. Ruth is survived by daughters, Dona Ball, Salt Lake City, UT; Patti (Galen) Busch of Mission, SD; Kathleen Kundel, Chamberlain, SD; Michell (Chris) Wood-Clark, Hamptonville, NC; and sons Joe (LeAnn) Wood, Odessa, TX; and Jon (Shirley) Wood, Morrison, CO.; 33grandchildren, 66 great-grandchildren, and numerous great-great grandchildren. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe; daughter, Launa Blonquist; granddaughter P{epper Lee Blonquist; sons-in-law, Roger Ball, Richard Blonquist, and Dr. Robert Kundel; twin sister, Ruby, and brothers Jesse Delaney, Roy Dulany, and John D. Dulany.
