Obituary

Ruth Rasmussen, age 89, of 1345 Michigan Ave. SW, Huron, died Saturday, November 17, 2007, at the Huron Nursing Home. Her funeral service will be 11:00 am Wednesday at American Lutheran Church with Rev. Steven Brandsrud officiating. Burial will be at 2:00 pm Wednesday at Pleasant Lutheran Cemetery near Vienna, SD. Visitation will be this Tuesday from 1:00 to 8:00 pm at the Welter Funeral Home with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 pm and Wednesday morning one hour prior to the service at the church. Ruth Rasmussen was born Ruth Kathleen Braaten on April 24, 1918, to Knute and Rachel (Iverson) Braaten on the family farm near Bryant, SD. She was baptized and confirmed at the Garfield Church near Bryant and attended country school. Ruth lived on the homestead until November 6, 1938, when she married Hans Rasmussen in Watertown, SD. Following their marriage the couple lived on a farm in the Vienna area where Ruth was a homemaker; in 1944 they moved to Bryant where Ruth worked in a restaurant; in 1948 they moved to Willow Lake where Ruth worked in a restaurant; in 1952 they moved to Huron where Ruth worked at the Huron Cleaners and in 1963 began work as a nurses aide at St. Johns Hospital; in 1973 they moved to Cavour where Ruth continued to work at the hospital in Huron until her retirement in 1983. She entered the Huron Nursing Home on August 26, 2003. She was a member of American Lutheran Church, Cavour Senior Center, and the Degree of Honor. Her many interests included fishing, camping, canning, gardening, playing cards, visiting and having coffee at her home with her neighbors. She is survived by 1 son, Larry (Alice) Rasmussen of Huron; 1 daughter, Rosanne (Leon) Schroeder of Huron; 4 grandchildren, Mark Rasmussen, Jane Rasmussen, Scott Schroeder, and Angie Schroeder; 5 great grandchildren, Stephanie (Justin) Dame, Jennifer Rasmussen, Samantha Bintliff, Kyle Neuharth, and Joni Neuharth; 1 great great grandchild, Addison Dame; 1 sister, Alice Lehtola of Lake Norden, SD; 1 niece and several nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hans on August 16, 1997; 1 son, Robert Dale Rasmussen; 1 daughter, Penny Renee Rasmussen; 2 brothers, Theodore Braaten, and George Braaten; 1 sister, Laura Braaten; 1 sister-in-law, Mabel Braaten; and 1 brother-in-law, Abner Lehtola.
