Ruby Schmidtgall was born Ruby Ellen Weber, daughter of Carl and Minnie (Engel) Weber, on May 14, 1921, in rural Miller, SD. She attended country school through the 8th grade, then remained on the family farm until the date of her marriage.

On June 6, 1942, Ruby married William Schmidtgall in Huron. They moved to a farm near Virgil, SD, where they lived for a short period of time prior to moving into Huron. Ruby worked at Humphrey Drugstore, Miller Bakery, and Raven Industries.

In 1962, they moved to Garden Grove, CA. While living there Ruby commuted to Costa Mesa, CA, where she worked as a foreman for Chrondek Company making timing lights for drag-racing tracks; and later commuted to Torrance, CA, where she worked as a foreman for Solar Laboratories in the plastics division.

In 1976, they retired and moved to Alpena, SD, where Ruby lived until 2008 when she moved to Huron. Ruby continued to work for several years as a care-giver for several families in the Alpena area. Her husband, William, died on November 18, 1989. Ruby became a resident of SunQuest Healthcare Center on April 17, 2008.

She assisted in the library at the Alpena School; held many offices for the UMW (United Methodist Women); and was a life member of American Legion Owens-Kunze Post #116 Auxiliary of Alpena. Her many interests included fishing, playing cards, baseball especially the Minnesota Twins, watching sporting events on television and traveling. She always carried doggie-biscuits with her for the pet animals that she loved so dearly.
