Rozella DeVries, age 103, of Huron, SD, died Thursday, June 26, 2014, at Prairie View Care Center in Woonsocket, SD. Her funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 30, at First United Methodist Church with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be Sunday from 6-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.; or Monday morning one hour prior to the service at the church. Rozella DeVries was born Rozella Elizabeth Johnston, daughter of Willie and Mabel (Kann) Johnston, on July 9, 1910, on a farm north of Broadland, SD. She attended school in Broadland through the 10th grade, and then moved to Huron where she started in the 11th grade; however, Rozella developed Rheumatic Fever and was forced to drop out of school. During the great depression Rozella learned frugality. She helped her mother raise chickens, plant gardens, cook, bake, and can fruits, vegetables and meats. On January 1, 1929, Rozella married Art DeVries in Broadland. In 1934, it became impossible to earn a living on the farm, so Art attended a six-week refrigeration school in Sioux City, IA. He returned to Huron where he started his own refrigeration business. Rozella was a homemaker throughout her married life and she and Art raised 3 children - Mavis, Richard, and Voneta. Over the years she helped care for ill and elderly family members, and also lovingly babysat for her grandchildren when needed. One of Rozella's fondest memories is when Mavis was an infant; Art had purchased a washing machine and had installed a gasoline engine on it for Rozella to use, while her neighbors were still using a wash board. Art and Rozella enjoyed 20 years of winter retirement at San Juan, TX. Art died on July 27, 1991. By virtue of her 100th birthday Rozella became a member of the South Dakota Century Club awarded by the South Dakota Health Care Association. In October 2006 Rozella moved to Country View Estates in Huron where she lived until September 2012 when she became a resident of Prairie View Care Center in Woonsocket. Rozella became a member of First United Methodist Church in Huron in 1935 (79 years) and was active in many of the church activities. She enjoyed needlework, creating doilies, gardening, and over the years had crocheted many afghans. Rozella is a true South Dakota pioneer woman. In her 103+ years she had experienced the best of times and the worst of times. She was very much loved and revered by her family and many friends. Rozella will always be remembered for her kindness and generosity. Rozella is survived by 2 children, Mavis Grace of Huron, and Voneta (John) Freese of Pipestone, MN; 8 grandchildren, Brett (Kelley) Freese, Mike (friend Julie) Freese, Ryan (Erica) Freese, David Grace, Rick (friend Debbie) Grace, Cindy (Kevin) Eckmann, Lori Kearney, and Darin (friend Dusty) DeVries; 11 great grandchildren, Dominic Freese, Aiden Freese, Brigit Freese, Heather Grace, Cody (Jamie) Grace, Mike (Jamie) Eckmann, Angie (Curt) Reindl, Elizabeth (Matt) Pester, Josh (Jenny) DeVries, Jonathan DeVries, and Isaiah Dinger-DeVries; 10 great great grandchildren, Peyton Grace, Madalyn Grace, Ashlyn Grace, Dylan Reindl, Jase Reindl, Alec Pester, Nora Pester, Jayden DeVries, Natalie DeVries, and Adabelle DeVries; 1 nephew; and 3 great nephews.
