Roy E. Long, 85, Huron, and formerly of Akaska died Monday, April 12, 2004, at the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home in Huron. His funeral service will be 1:00 P.M. Thursday at St. John Lutheran Church, Selby, with Dale Hamre officiating. Burial will be 4:00 PM Thursday at the Akaska Cemetery with Military Rites by the Fredrick Schauer American Legion Post No. 100, Selby, SD. Visitation will be at the Miller Funeral Chapel, Selby, from 5:00-9:00 PM Wednesday with a prayer service scheduled for 7:00 PM. Miller Funeral Home, Bowdle, is in charge of arrangements. Welter Funeral Home assisted with local arrangements. Roy E. Long was born on October 30, 1918, to Robert Carl and Berta (Funk) Long at Kansas City, MO. As a young child he moved with his family to Wymore, NE, where he grew up, attended school, and graduated from Wymore High School in 1936. After graduation he worked for a period of time for a sporting goods store in Minneapolis. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After his honorable discharge Roy moved to Cheyenne, WY, where his parents had moved to while he was in the Army. A short time later, Roy married Leona Warchol. In 1952, he began working as a factory sales representative for the Winchester Repeating Arms and Ammunition Company in St. Paul, MN. On June 27, 1961, Roy married Shirley Kinkle in Iowa, and they continued to live in St. Paul. In 1968, the couple moved to Aberdeen where Roy continued working in his present occupation. He retired in 1981. In 1988, they moved to Akaska, SD, and to Huron in May of 2003. Roy entered the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home in Huron on February 26, 2004. He was a member of St. John?s Lutheran Church in Selby, SD, Elks Club in Aberdeen, a life member of the National Rifle Association, was a professional trap-shooter and a member of the Amateur Trap Shooting Association. Roy was honored as a trap shooter All American 11 times. He is survived by his wife, Shirley of Huron; 3 sons, Greg (Roberta) Long of Huron, Jerry (Kathy) Long of St. Paul, and Donald Long of St. Paul; 1 daughter, Diana (Richard) Horvath of St. Paul; 2 step-sons, Randy (Debbie) Woods of Canton, SD, and Daniel (Jeannie) Woods of Rock Hill, SC; 8 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren, 1 nephew Larry Long of Salt Lake City, Utah, and his faithful dog Hans. He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters, Frances Jones, and Patty Long; and 2 brothers, Merle Long, and Maynard Long.
