Roy K. Andersen, age 82 of Huron, passed away on August 22, 2026 at Sanford USD Medical Center from complications during a hip replacement surgery. Private services were held at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, Huron, South Dakota. 

Roy Karl was born February 17, 1944 to E.A. and Helen (Simonds) Andersen on a farm, north of Lake Preston. Shortly after he was born, the family moved to St. Lawrence, where his parents were both teachers and he completed his first 8 grades of school. The family then moved to Spearfish and then to Huron, when he was a junior in high school. Roy graduated from Huron High School in 1962.

Roy married Sharon Gross September 11, 1964 at the American Lutheran Church with Pastor Erling Erickson officiating.

He attended Huron College and worked at the Huron Culvert and Tank for a short time, before he started his career with the Chicago North Western Railroad, in Huron. He was later transferred to Council Bluffs, Iowa. After Roy was injured on the railroad, they moved back to Huron. In 2004 Roy and Sharon started SA Transportation hauling railroad crews. He maintained the cabs and Sharon did the bookkeeping until they retired in 2017, when his grandson took over the company.

Roy enjoyed all sports and was an avid Twins, Duke and Vikings fan.

Some of Roy’s most special times were spent hunting and fishing with his close “fishing buddies”, family and friends. He especially loved time spent in the Black Hills and on the Missouri River.

He enjoyed traveling and going to the grandchildren and great grandchildren's activities. He was always their biggest fan.

Roy is survived by his wife Sharon, of Huron; 2 daughters, RaeAnn (Rodney) Hopf, of Huron and Marsha (Travis) Zimmerman, of Omaha, NE.

7 grandchildren Alee (Brian) Robertson, Alex(Emily Anderson)Larson, Jazzmyne Zimmerman, Adam Bickett, Madisen (Andrew Zuzma) Zimmerman, Simon (Tracy Collier) Zimmerman, and Sondra (David) Naber. 10 great grandchildren Daemon Robertson, Emily (Noah Horsley) Larson, Thorin Robertson, Hannah Larson, Isaac Larson, Mabel Zuzma, Braeden Naber, Preston Naber Bentley Naber and Leila Navarro.

He is also survived by a sister Margaret (Peggy) Andersen and a brother-in-law Monte Scheel. 3 nephews Greg Scheel, Geoffrey and Garrett Gross, and a niece Andrea Scheel, along with numerous members of his extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents E.A. and Helen Andersen, father-in-law and mother-in-law Pete W. and Edna Gross; 2 sisters Judy Vandenberg and Carol Scheel, a nephew Mark Scheel, 2 brothers-in-law Lyle Gross and Max Vandenberg and a sister-in-law Georgia Gross.

He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
