Rose Marie Peterson, age 75, of Huron, died Friday, April 15, 2011 at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD. Her funeral will be 10:30 am Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at American Lutheran Church in Huron with burial in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-8 pm Monday, April 18, 2011 at Welter Funeral Home with family present from 5-7 pm; or one hour prior to service at the church. Rose Marie Peterson was born March 29, 1936, to John M. and Sarah J. (Hofer) Gross near Freeman, SD. She attended country school near Freeman and graduated from Freeman Academy in 1954. She attended Freeman Junior College for one year and then taught in country schools for six years. In 1961, she returned to Freeman Junior College and received an A.A. degree. She transferred to Tabor College, Hillsboro, KS, and graduated with a B.A. degree in 1964. She taught in Freeman and Sioux Falls Public Schools. Rose Marie was baptized in September of 1949 and became a member of Salem Mennonite Brethren Church of rural Bridgewater, SD. She taught Sunday School and Bible School for many years. On June 30, 1968, Rose Marie married Gerald Peterson of Huron at Salem Mennonite Brethren Church. In 1969, she joined American Lutheran Church in Huron. She was active in the church, teaching Sunday School for many years and playing in the bell choir. She enjoyed the fellowship of the ELCW, where she became involved with the World Relief; sewing many quilts and school bags, preparing and packing school supply kits, health kits, and sewing kits. For many years she prepared and mixed the pie crusts and lefse for the church functions. Rose Marie enjoyed her family and especially her grandchildren. She loved to cook, bake, and entertain. Her hobbies included reading, sewing, handwork, and travel. She played the piano and organ. She was a member of SD Retired Teachers, RSVP, Huron Rovers Camping Club, and Scamp Owners Int. Rose Marie is survived by her husband, Gerald of Huron; daughters, Janet (Mike) Carter of Rapid City, SD, Julie (Troy) Stenzel of Fairmont, MN; 4 grandchildren, Amanda and Gabrielle Carter, Ethan and Kellen Stenzel; sister, Janice (Gordon) Peterson of Huron; brothers, Harlan and David Gross of Freeman, SD; special friend, Jasmin Falk of Munich, Germany; 2 nieces, 2 nephews, and 19 cousins. Rose Marie was preceded in death by her parents and 2 cousins.
