Ronald Smidt, age 77, of Huron died Wednesday, August 27, 2014 at the Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls. His funeral will be 10:30 am Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at Welter Funeral Home in Huron with burial in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be from 6-8 pm Monday, September 1, 2014 at Welter Funeral Home; or one hour prior to the funeral service. Ronald Gene Smidt was born on July 25, 1937 in Buffalo Center, IA to Mike and Aberdeen (Abbas) Smidt. At an early age, he moved with his family to Bancroft, SD. As the oldest child, Ron spent most of his time helping on the family farm. He married Laura Husted in October of 1956 in Huron. Ron owned Ronnie's Garage for many years. He retired in the early 1990's due to health reasons. Ron married Kathy Stai in May of 2012 in Hartford, SD. He loved car races, even owning and driving the #16 modified stock car at the races in Huron. Ron was a member of the Moose Lodge and Elk's Club. He loved fishing, going to horse shows, and tinkering on cars and antique tractors. Ron loved camping and had spent the last few winters in Arizona. Ron is survived by his wife, Kathy Smidt of Huron; his children, Robbin (Myra) Smidt of Huron, Rodney (Deanna) Smidt of Fairbanks, AK, Nancy Smidt of Sturgis, Brian Smidt of Aberdeen; eight grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; four siblings, Tootie (Charles) Flowers of Iroquois, Larry Smidt of Huron, Kenny (Margaret) Smidt of Hartford, Terry (Jan) Smidt of Huron; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Jack Farness of Mound, MN. Ron was preceded in death by his parents.
