Romeo Layton, age 72, of Gettysburg, SD, and formerly of Huron, died Friday, June 15, 2007, at Avera McKennan Hospital at Sioux Falls. His funeral service will be at 2:00 PM Wednesday at the Welter Funeral Home with Rev. Alan Wager officiating. Friends may call Tuesday afternoon and evening and Wednesday until time of service at the Welter Funeral Home. The family will be present from 7:00 to 8:30 PM Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Romeo Ruben Layton was born on April 15, 1935, to Clade and Alvina (Jasmer) Layton at Leola, SD. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church at Leole. Romeo grew up on various farms and attended school in the Leola/Aberdeen area until 1950 when he moved with his parents to Huron. He worked for a period of time on road construction in the Huron area. On June 19, 1954, Romeo married June Wilcox at Huron. He worked for Armour and Company for 26 years until its closing, then the couple moved to Ft. Madison, IA, where he worked for Armour Dial Corporation for 8 years until 1990 when ill health forced his retirement. Romeo and June moved back to Huron for a short period of time, then moved to South Whitlock Resort near Gettysburg, SD. He was a past member of American Lutheran Church in Huron. He was an outdoor enthusiast, including fishing and hunting and reading outdoor-related magazines, playing cards, traveling, and dancing. He is survived by his wife, June of Gettysburg; 3 sons, Russ (Pam) Layton of Huron, Shannon (Luann) Layton of Council Bluffs, IA, and Harold Layton and special friend Shelley Bonge of Omaha, NE; 2 daughters, Gwen (Duane) Legband of Benedict, NE, and Joan (Ron) Hoden of Crescent, IA; 9 grandchildren, Travis Layton, Brandon Layton, Adam Layton, Eric (Maria) Johnson, Megan Sandberg, T.J. (Chrystal) Johnson, Benjamin (Peggy) Layton, Sarah Layton, and Michael Legband; 1 great grandson, Damien Johnson; 1 sister, Violet (Keith) Elton of Billings, MT; and 2 brothers, Arlo (Florence) Layton of Aberdeen, and Viril (Mary) Layton of Austin, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister, Gerene Layton; and 1 brother, Harvey Layton.
