Obituary

Roland "Tom" Thompson, age 80, of Huron, SD, died Friday, September 28, 2012, at Dougherty House in Sioux Falls. His funeral service will be 10:30 Wednesday, October 3, at American Lutheran Church with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with family present from 6-8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m.; or Wednesday morning one hour prior to the service at the church. Roland L. Thompson, son of Oscar and Clara (Vangsness) Thompson, was born on March 8, 1932, in Leonard, ND. He graduated from Leonard High School in 1950. He then attended mechanics school. On June 9, 1952, Tom enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a radioman aboard the USS Bauer. He was honorably discharged on May 29, 1956. In 1956 Tom married Shirley Quill in North Dakota. He then attended North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, ND. He graduated in 1958 with a degree in electronics. Following college he was hired by Northwestern Public Service where he spent his entire work career of 35 years retiring in 1994 as superintendent of electronic control. On June 12, 1976, Tom married Donna Gogolin in Huron. He was a member of American Lutheran Church; and American Legion William Reaves Post #7 of Huron. His many interests included operating his ham radio, golfing, hunting, camping, traveling, watching television especially the Minnesota Vikings and the Twins, yard work, and his passion for chocolate covered peanuts. He is survived by his wife, Donna of Huron; 4 children, Steve Thompson of Albuquerque, NM, Kim (Rob) Rieger of Huron, Michael (Tammy) Dramstad of Huron, and Matt Dramstad of Huron; 5 grandchildren, Anthony Thompson, Jacob Rieger, Gabriel Rieger, Thorn Dramstad, and Thacher Dramstad; and 1 sister, Betty Lou Strand of Fargo, ND; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister; and brother-in-law, Donald Strand.
