Roger Puthoff, age 69, of Huron, was called home to the Heavenly Father on Friday, July 17, 2026 at Ava’s Hospice House in Sioux Falls, South Dakota surrounded by his loving family. His funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, July 24, 2026 at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Huron. 

Visitation, with his family present, will be from 5-7 p.m., on Thursday, July 23, 2026 at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish. There will be a rosary and scripture service at 6:30 p.m. 

Burial will be at St. Ann’s Catholic Cemetery in Humboldt at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, July 24, 2026, with military rites by the American Legion and South Dakota Army National Guard Honor Guard. 

Roger Joseph Puthoff was born on August 9, 1956 in Sioux Falls to Lawrence and Celestine “Sally” (Roth) Puthoff. He attended school in the Humboldt and Parker areas. Roger joined the Army in 1976. He was united in marriage to Karla Beth Judkins on June 10, 1978. While stationed in Dayton, Ohio, the couple welcomed their son, Ben, on Valentine’s Day 1989. The couple met in Hawaii and, as Roger continued his military service they traveled through the United States and Europe. After 20 years in the Army, Roger retired in 1996. After his retirement, Roger went to work for the South Dakota Department of Health, Department of Commerce and the Department of Public Safety, where he worked as a Health Inspector and State Inspector until his retirement.

Roger was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, where he served as a Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator. He also served as the Central Degree Captain for many years with the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Huron Ministerial Association, where he served as the treasurer. He also served on the Huron Area Senior Center Board.

One of Roger’s most rewarding accomplishments was when he was ordained as Permanent Deacon for the Catholic Church on May 28, 2015. As Deacon, he very much enjoyed the visits to the shut-ins, the individuals in the nursing home and the prison inmates. Roger very much enjoyed prison ministry; working with the inmates at the State Penitentiary both on the Hill and in Jameson Annex, along with the local county jail. This gave him a completely new outlook on life. Roger truly enjoyed working with the inmates and team members when he spent time with them during Alternative to Violence (AVP) weekends and the Residents Encounter Christ (REC) weekends at the Penitentiary.

Roger is survived by his son, Ben of Huron; his brothers, Larry of Sioux Falls, Lyle (Shirley) of Salem, Jim (Donna) of Sioux Falls; his sisters, Georgiana Donahue of Marshalltown, IA, Mary (Roger) Mueller of Mankato, MN, Eileen Mullenberg of Rapid City, Anita (Jim) Morris of Sioux Falls, Karen (Ray) Anderson of Sioux Falls and Cheryl Barenklau of Sioux Falls; sister-in-law Linda Puthoff and brother-in-law Dan Barenklau; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by the love of his life Karla on February 23, 2026, his father and mother, Lawrence and Sally, brother Dennis, brother Charles, brothers-in-law Steve Ingalls, Mike Donahue, sisters-in-law, Geraldine “Geri” Puthoff, Mary Lou Puthoff, nephew Scott Puthoff and niece Lori Puthoff.

The family wishes to thank all the nursing staff at Sanford Health, especially Ava’s Hospice House for the wonderful care.

In lieu of flowers, Roger requested memorials to Holy Trinity Catholic School to enhance teachers’ salaries, and to The Dcn. Roger and Karla Puthoff Memorial Endowment.
