Obituary

Robert Bob Viken, age 83, of 1580 Kansas Ave. SE, Huron, died Tuesday, September 14, 2004, at the Beverly Healthcare Center at Rapid City. His funeral mass will be at 11:00 AM Saturday, September 18, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Msgr. Michael Woster officiating. Burial will be at St. Martin Cemetery with Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council. Friends may call Friday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the mass at the church Saturday morning. There will be a Scripture Service followed by a Rosary at 7:00 PM Friday evening at the funeral home. Bob Viken was born on February 7, 1921, to John and Martha (Sandvold) Viken at Sioux City, IA. He grew up in Sioux City and graduated from Sioux City East High School in 1939. He then worked for Armour and Company in Sioux City in administration. On August 14, 1942, Bob married Dorothy Hulce at Sioux City, IA. The couple made their home in Sioux City. On November 13, 1942, Bob entered the U.S. Army and served in the European Theater during World War II. He was honorably discharged on November 6, 1945. He returned to Sioux City and resumed working at Armour and Company as an industrial engineer. The company transferred Bob in 1951 to the Armour plant in Huron where he worked in the same capacity until his retirement in 1983. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, William Reaves American legion Post #7, Forrest McMullen VFW Post #1776, Armour Mens Club, and Broadland Creek Golf Course. His past memberships include St. Martin Catholic Church Parish Council, Eucharistic Minister at St. Martin, and Salvation Army Board of Directors. He always cherished the time that he could spend with his family, especially his grandchildren. His many interests included golfing, hunting, fishing, woodcarving in his later years, extensive traveling with Dorothy throughout the U.S. including a trip to Rome in 1983, photography, and watching sports particularly the Minnesota Twins. He is survived by 2 sons, Gary (Jeanne) Viken of Pierre, SD, and Jeff (Linda Lea) Viken of Rapid City, SD; 2 granddaughters, Andrea (Jonathan) Urbach of Farmington, MN, and Kristin (Aaron) Carlson of West Des Moines, IA; and 2 great granddaughters, Anna Urbach, and Olivia Urbach. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy on September 16, 2002.
