Robert T. Valentine, age 86, of 1345 Michigan Ave. SW, Huron and formerly of Wolsey, died Tuesday, November 13, 2007 at the Huron Nursing Home. His funeral service will be 10:00 AM Saturday, November 17th at Welter Funeral Home with Rev. Chip Holmes officiating. Burial will be at the Wolsey Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 3:00 to 8:00 PM at the Welter Funeral Home with the family present from 7:00 to 8:00 PM and Saturday morning until the time of service. Robert Thomas Valentine was born February 7, 1921 at St. Lukes Hospital in Aberdeen, SD to Richard and Kathy (Ryan) Valentine of rural Leola, SD. He attended Willow #3 country school, graduating from the 8th grade. He also attended N.Y.A. Welding School at Sand Lake, SD. Robert grew up on the family farm, and then worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps on dam construction near Hill City, SD. He later worked on several other construction dam projects in South Dakota, Virginia, and Greenland. After several years of construction, he purchased his fathers homestead near Leola and farmed for 41 years before retiring. He married Mary Rothleutner at St. James Catholic Church in Douglas, WY on November 29, 1953. There were 5 children born to his marriage. On March 10, 1995 he married Iola Mildred Paye at Aberdeen, SD and they lived in Wolsey, SD until he entered the Huron Nursing Home in Huron. Robert had collected toy tractors and loved tinkering in his yard with various things, visiting with his neighbors, enjoying the outdoors, reading history books and various magazines on farming. Survivors include his wife, Iola Mildred Valentine of Wolsey, SD; 2 sons, John (Doris) Valentine of Virginia and Charles (Denyse) Valentine of Curtis, WI; 2 daughters, Susan (Galen) Sollie of Plainfield, IL and Gail (Ronald) Phillipe of Bismarck, ND; 17 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lucille Valentine of Pasadena, CA. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, 1 son, Richard and 1 brother, Edward Valentine.
