Obituary

Robert J. Melody, age 63, of Huron, SD, passed away on Thursday, August 11, 2016 at Prairie View Care Center in Woonsocket, SD.

His Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m.  Monday, August 15, 2016 at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Huron, with burial at St. Martin Cemetery, Huron.

Visitation, with the family present, will be from 4-6 p.m. Sunday, August 14, with a Rosary to begin at 6:00 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home in Huron; or one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.

Robert J. Melody, the son of William and Shirley (Tousley) Melody, was born on September 24, 1952 in Mitchell, SD.  He attended school and graduated from O'Gorman High School, and received   a Bachelor's Degree from Northern State University.

Bob was the terminal manager for American Freight for 15 years.  He owned the Sportsman Bar in Huron, SD prior to working for Metz Baking Company, and Ellwein Brothers Inc. before retiring in 2013.

Bob married Connie K. Doolittle on July 14, 1973 at St. Martin Church in Huron, SD. They lived in Aberdeen, SD, and Cedar Falls, IA before moving to Huron in 1982.

Bob was a member of St. Martin Catholic Church and Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Huron.  He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Elks Lodge.

Bob enjoyed coaching and officiating sports. He enjoyed participating in softball, basketball, bowling, hunting, and golf. He also loved taking road trips and spending time with his family and friends.

Grateful for having shared in Bob's life are his wife of 43 years, Connie of Huron, SD; daughter, Kristin (Joe) Campbell  of Hurley, SD; son, Brian (Kaci) Melody of Golden, CO; two grandchildren, Evan and Aleah Campbell; brothers, Mike Melody of Omaha, NE and Tom (Mary) Melody of Maple Grove, MN; sisters, Susan (Bill) Needham of Brandywine, MD and Mary Pat Melody and her husband Sean Kennedy of Olathe, KS; his mother- and father-in-law, Faye and Harold Doolittle of Huron, SD; sister-in-law, Debbie (Ralph) Wagner of Las Vegas, NV; and several nieces and nephews.

Bob was preceded in death by his grandparents; his parents, Bill and Shirley; and sister-in-law, Sharon Melody.

Memorials may be made in Bob's name to the family and will be used for Alzheimer's Research and the Prairie View Care Center in Woonsocket.
