Robert H. Hofmann, age 89, of Huron, died on Saturday, April 2, 2011 at the Huron Regional Medical Center. His Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 7, 2011 at the Welter Funeral Home in Huron, with burial at the Restlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery, and Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council. His Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, at the Welter Funeral Home, with the family present from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday night; or one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Thursday. Robert H. Hofmann, the son of John Henry and Alice (Burington) Hofmann, was born on November 9, 1921 in Huron, SD. He attended school in the Huron area. Robert served his country in the United States Marine Corps and was wounded during World War II. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant in 1945. Robert worked maintenance for the Armour Packing Plant for 40 years before retiring in 1983. Robert married Lorraine Baye on January 17, 1944 in Huron, SD. They lived in California and North Carolina before moving to Huron in1945. Robert was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Huron, and a lifetime member of the Forrest-McMullen VFW Post #1776. He enjoyed woodworking, travelling and cooking. Robert was very creative, and could solve any mechanical problem. Grateful for having shared in Robert's life are his son, Kevin Hofmann, of Huron, SD; his daughter Iris Hofmann, of Richfield, MN; granddaughter, Heather (Ryan) Helm, of Richfield, MN; great-granddaughter, Aubri Helm; and several nieces and nephews. Robert was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lorraine in 1998; and his sister, Ruth Christopherson.
