Robert L. Broer, age 85, of 784 Illinois Ave. NW, Huron, died Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at the Huron Regional Medical Center.
His funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 17, at the Calvary Baptist Church, Huron with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery with Military rites by the Huron Veterans Council.
Visitation will be Friday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Welter Funeral Home with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. or Saturday morning one hour prior to the service at the church.
Robert Broer was born on January 25, 1923, to Paul Amos and Daisy Violet (Brockman) Broer in Beadle County, SD. He graduated from Alpena High School. On January 6, 1943, Bob enlisted in the United States Army and served during World War II at New Guinea, Southern Philippines and Luzon and was honorably discharged on December 23, 1945
On December 29, 1945, Bob married Theda Duncan at Los Angeles, California. They moved to the Beadle County area where he farmed for many years.
He was Beadle County Commissioner for 12 years, and served on the following boards, James Valley co-op board, Grant Township school board, Spring Valley Farmers Union Local, Beadle County weed board, Huron Regional Medical Center's Board of Directors, Huron Area Senior Center Board of Directors, Beadle County Nutrition Board, Grant Township Board, and the Beadle County extension board, and was a member of Forrest McMullen Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1776.
He is survived by his wife Theda of Huron; three sons, Gary (Janet) Broer of Phoenix, AZ, Philip (Lilly) Broer of St. Paul, MN, and Steve Broer of Huron; one daughter Linda (Vince) Wagner of Alpena, SD; 11 grandchildren, Loralee (Robert) Broer-Marshall, Joy (Ben) Meyer, Jennifer Broer, David (Danielle) Broer, Dena Barton, Sarah (Lee) Topel, Paul (Sanja) Broer, Audra Barton, Jay (Laina) Barton, Jessica Broer, and Parker Broer; four great-grandchildren, Joshua Broer, Will Meyer, Tate Meyer, and Brady Meyer; three brothers, Charles (Maxine) Broer of Rapid City, SD, George (Dorothy) Broer of Huron, and Wesley (Sara) Broer of Black Hawk, SD; one sister, Illene Harrison of Albuquerque, NM; and many nieces, nephews and special friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Alan Broer.
