Rita A. Mills, age 93, passed away on Thursday, May 23, 2019 at her home in Huron. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be
at 10:30 AM
on Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Huron. Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Howard, SD. Visitation with the family present will be from 2-4 PM on Monday, May 27th with a scripture prayer service beginning at 3:30 pm at Welter Funeral Home
; or visitation one hour prior to the funeral mass at the church on Tuesday.
Rita A. Mills was born in Howard on April 13, 1926 to John "Fritz" and Teresia (Miller) Peschong. She attended school at St. Agatha's in Howard.
After graduation, she went to nursing school in Sioux City, Iowa where she graduated as a nurse. Rita worked as a nurse in Storm Lake, IA where she met her future husband, James H. Mills, dancing at the Cobble Stone. Rita and James were married on July 23, 1949 in Howard, South Dakota. Rita and James moved to Ames, Iowa where she worked as an OB nurse.
Rita and James adopted their first son in 1959, David James Mills and moved to Huron, SD shortly after that. In 1961, they adopted their daughter Sara Ann Mills and in 1963 they adopted Todd Richard Mills. Rita was a stay-at-home mom to her 3 children who were so blessed to have the parents they had. Rita also enjoyed playing bridge. She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish and the cemetery club.
Grateful for having her in their lives are her children Sara Eckmann and Todd (Angie) Mills; Grandchildren Leslie (Melissa) Wolff, Brady, Emily, Madison, and Krystiana Mills; Great grandchildren Peyton, Morgan, Haley, Cole, Raquel and Olivia; Brothers Jim (Barb) Peschong and Al (Mary) Peschong.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jim in 1994, her in-laws, her son David, brothers Richard, Leon, and Tom; sisters Helen, Carol, and Donna; and two sisters-in-law, Wilda Bell and Verlie Alm.
Thank you, Mom and Dad, for adopting us and giving us a wonderful life. A special thanks to all the wonderful women that allowed mom to remain in her home. The Mills family loves you all. Thank you.
