Rickey A. Erickson, age 71, of Huron and formerly of Yale, passed away on Monday, October 3, 2022 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. His funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, October 9, 2022 at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church with burial to follow at Riverside Cemetery in Huron. Visitation, with the family present will be from 4-6 PM on Saturday, October 8, 2022 at Welter Funeral Home in Huron; or one hour prior to the service at the church on Sunday. A Prayer Service and Time of Sharing will begin at 5:30 PM Saturday evening at the funeral home. Rickey Arthur Erickson was born on November 3, 1950 to parents Arthur and Gladys (Dietz) Erickson in Huron, South Dakota. Rick attended Huron schools, graduating in 1969. He married Joette Ford in Yale, South Dakota on August 3, 1974.
Rick worked for the Chicago Northwestern Rail Road from 1970-1973. He then worked for Flanery Meats from 1974-1978 before beginning his career with the Beadle County Highway Department where he retired in 2015 as Patrol Operator.
In his spare time, Rick enjoyed hunting, fishing and working on model railroading. He cheered for Duke Basketball, Minnesota Twins baseball, Pittsburg Steelers football and Elkton Elks athletics. Spending time with his grandchildren was the most important to him. He was a member of the Iroquois School Board from 1976-1991. He held various positions in local and council offices since 1980 in A.F.S.C.M.E (American Federation State County Municipal Employees) where he received the Taylor Morsching Award in 1994. He was a founding member and board member of Beadle-Spink Basic Board from 1994-2004. Rick was also on the Yale Town Board from 1991-1995.
He is survived by his wife, Joette of Huron; his sons, Aaron (Becki) of Watertown and Steven (Melissa) of Elkton; 4 grandchildren, Tatum Erickson, Aiden Erickson, Tevan Erickson and Eliot Erickson; his siblings, Carol Erickson of Aberdeen, Sandra (Ken) Erickson of Mountain City, TN, Vickie Brodkorb of Wessington Springs, and Julie (Jeff) Bryant of Belle Fourche; sibling-in-law, Kathy (Roger) Rusche of Arizona, Tom (Roxy) Ford of Huron, Peggy (Loren) Schaller of Rapid City and Bill (LeAnn) Ford of Huron; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Gladys; brothers-in-law Mark Brodkorb and Gus Erickson; parents-in-law, Joseph and Esther Ford.
