Richard "Rick" Sammons, age 67, of Huron, SD passed away on Thursday, October 1, 2015 at his home in Huron. His funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at the Huron Christian Church in Huron with burial at the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, and Military honors by the Huron Veterans Council. His visitation, with the family present, will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday, October 5, 2015 at the Welter Funeral Home in Huron, with a prayer service to begin at 6:30 p.m.; or one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Richard Sammons, the son of Lloyd and Darlene (Dixon) Sammons, was born on June 25, 1948 in Huron, SD. He attended Huron High School and received his GED. Rick joined his brother in serving his country in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Iwo Jima during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in April of 1969. Richard returned home to Huron and worked for Asphalt Paving until 1980 when he went to work for the City of Huron. Rick retired from the city in 2004 and returned to Asphalt Paving Construction until ill health forced him to retire again. Rick married Barbara Bell on March 6, 1968 in Huron, SD. Rick's love of car racing took him to races all over the country. He liked NASCAR, but his true passion was dirt car racing, especially sprint cars which he enjoyed with both his sons, and made many lifelong racing buddies. His other passion was his grandsons whom he adored and how they loved their "PaPa". Rick gave his life to the Lord in 2011 and was baptized a few days before his passing as was his request. Grateful for having shared in Rick's life are his wife Barbara of Huron, SD; his mother, Darlene Sammons of Huron, SD; his sons: Richard "Ricky" Sammons of Huron, SD and Ryan Sammons of Milbank and three grandsons, Joshua, Tony, and Cayden; three brothers: Jim Sammons of Omaha, NE, Mike (Kim) Sammons of Kearney, NE, and Rod (Sandy) Sammons of Sioux Falls, SD; sister-in-law, Nancy Eveleth of Sioux Falls, SD, Doug (Teresa) Bell of Huron, and Renee (Wayne) Hanson of Huron; uncle, Jim Dixon of Huron; and many nieces and nephew. He was preceded in death by his father Lloyd in 2001; his grandparents, Father and mother-in-law, Richard and Dora Bell; and sister-in-law, Lori Bell.
