Obituary

Richard Mehling, age 92, of rural Wessington, died Friday, August 8, 2008, at the Huron Regional Medical Center. His funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 12, 2008, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Wessington. Burial will be at St. Josephs Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Welter Funeral Home and from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday evening and Tuesday morning prior to the mass at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Wessington. There will be a Scripture service at 7 p.m. Monday evening at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Wessington. Richard Mehling was born on April 26, 1916, to Robert and Elsie (Meyer) Mehling at West Point, NE. He attended country school near West Point and then moved with his family north of Arco, MN. On November 18, 1940, Richard married Lorraine A. Runge at Tyler, MN. They moved to the Wessington area in 1943, where he has lived and farmed since that time. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Wessington. He was a DEKALB dealer for 38 years, and was on the Hulbert township board for many years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting pheasants and his lifelong friends in Ohio. He also loved Ford vehicles and John Deere machinery. He is survived by 2 sons, Roy (Mary) Mehling and Jerry (Deb) Mehling both of Wessington; 2 daughters, Carole (Donald) Beckman of Huron and Judy (Jim) Troth of Wessington; 16 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; and one sister, Esther Hauswedell of Tyler, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, on September 6, 2000, 2 daughters-in-law, Janet and Debra Mehling, 1 granddaughter, Brenda Mehling, 1 sister, Laura Halling and his infant brother.
